News for Actors!

What Do I Need To Know About General Auditions?
Casting directors sometimes hold general auditions as a way of finding new talent or testing actors they’re not familiar with. A general audition may include a short interview, something like a go-see. However, at a general audition you’ll also be expected to perform a monologue of your choosing. The rules are much the same as preparing and performing a monologue for any occasion, but with some exceptions and emphases specific to on-camera auditions…

WORK ALERT!
Fudge It – TV Series in Development
When most little girls were playing with dolls, Fudge was learning pressure points. When most little boys were learning how fast they could ride their pushbikes, Fudge was learning how to pull a 180 degree handbrake turn in a mini minor. And when most girls were obsessing about boys, Fudge was learning how to strangle them-quietly. At 23, Fudge has become one of the best in the assassin business – and she loves what she does. But when the GFC hits, the nature of her work starts to changes and it’s no longer all about the bad guys. As she begins to question her profession and her justification for killing she soon finds herself on the outer with her very well connected, very deadly family. In the midst of her professional and existential crossroads, she must choose what she values most and decide whether to leave a business where the golden parachute comes with a faulty ripcord.

FEATURE INTERVIEW
Making Sense Of Globalism In Media And Entertainment: Frank Howson
A lot of prominent Australian actors and directors have moved overseas and generally only work on big-budget international productions. Do Australian actors and directors need to work overseas to make it?
“I think all actors and directors are creative gypsies by nature and, to me, it seems natural to gravitate to where the best projects are, regardless of what country they’re initiated in. I know of some Australian movie identities who are very happy to shit-can big, bad Hollywood in the Australian press, but almost break the sound barrier scrambling back to Tinsel Town when the phone rings. Seems a little hypocritical to me. I don’t judge the worthiness of a project by where it came from; I judge it by the inherent quality of the words and the ultimate statement it makes about humanity. In a perfect world, I’d love to make movies in my homeland that find an audience all over the world. That would be the ultimate – to tell my stories with my own voice…”

INSIDER SECRETS
Getting A Good Deal
Join the MEAA, they’re there to look after actors. Martin Fabinyi
I agree. Join the MEAA. Their collective bargaining strategies ensure you get a good deal. Michael Robinson
Yes, just join. Join Equity and follow their lead. Read what they send out and attend the regular forums that they hold for their members. Nathan Morris
Be aware of the kind of budget the production is working with. It’s no use trying to squeeze a great fee out of a short film that’s being made entirely off someone’s credit card and the whole crew are on deferrals. Michael Robinson
Actors shouldn’t try to talk finances to directors, it sours the creative relationship. Martin Fabinyi
A good deal means that the other party is happy, also. When negotiating your contract, don’t make outrageous demands that could lose you the deal and future ones. Martin Fabinyi
